    On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Co-operation and Development (BMZ), GTZ and the Ministry of Local Self-Government of the Republic of Macedonia, Bureau for economically underdeveloped regions, are jointly implementing the project for Regional Economic Development of the Eastern part of Macedonia (REDEM).

    General Goal:

    The overall objective of the project is to support the regional economy and employment in selected regions in the Eastern part of Republic of Macedonia according to the EU criteria.

    Why Regional Economic Development?

    Local actors from the private and public sector, and the civil society shall be put into position, on the basis of analysis of their potential and deficits to design strategies for improving regional economic development and to increase the efficiency and competitiveness of the project region.

    What is the challenge?

    The challenge for the selected regions is to take advantage from their comparative advantages and resources, to increase the private sector potential (mainly Small and Medium size Enterprises – SMEs), persistently to create more new jobs, and based on EU-compatible regional policy, to make the whole region attractive as competitive location.

    About the region

    The project region comprises of 23 municipalities covering an area of approximately 7.000 km2, with a total population of 375.000.

    Main components

    • Improving the legal and institutional framework for regional development
    • Establishing structures for regional management in the project region
    • Formulation and coordination / adjustment of a concept for regional development,
    • Institutional strengthening of the local and regional administration,
    • Development of regional initiatives for new-job opportunities,
    • Analysis and possible adoption of Good Practices from European regions,
    • Regional and location marketing as well public relations (e. g. fairs), in cooperation with the private sector.


    Existing local or regional economic potentials will be directed toward the increase of competitiveness of selected locations and economic regions. As a result, new possibilities for employment and income creation for the population in these regions will arise.

    Expected effects

    • improved competitiveness of the selected locations in the Eastern part of Macedonia,
    • job creation and income creation for the population in the project region,
    • strengthening of the regional corporate financial basis and
    • increasing the capacities of institutions on the sub-national levels for regional management.

    Who are we?
